Penetrant properties, Hazardous Characteristics

Safety is a concern because of the possible hazardous characteristics of each material used in compounding penetrants, emulsifier and developers. US federal law requires the manufacturer to identify and define the hazardous characteristics of each material used in formulation. This information must be listed in a materials safety data sheet (MSDS) prepared in accordance with 29 CFR 1910, 1200, Section (g), Materials safety Data Sheets.
Whenever a change in materials is made, the manufacturer must update the materials safety data sheet.

Liquid penetrant testing is a safe and reliable process when performed properly.
Personnel should always observe general safety practices at all times. Some general safety practices are to:

  1. Use the eye and face protection when spraying penetrant materials
  2. Keep clothing free of penetrant materials and change immediately if clothing becomes saturated with cleaning solvents or penetrant materials
  3. Clean penetrant materials off skin as soon as possible
  4. Avoid or limit exposure to penetrant materials in confined areas
  5. Wear safety shoes to protect the feet
  6. Lift heavy objects properly
  7. Be sure a fire extinguisher is within easy reach of the inspectors
  8. Wear proper protective clothing when adding or mixing chemicals
  9. Know the direction of spray before using aerosol cans
  10. Know the working environment and observe the safety rules for that area
  11. Know the proper disposal technique for aerosol containers
  12. Do not smoke when performing penetrant test
  13. Dispose of used wiping cloths and papers towels properly
