What is... Defects per Unit (DPU)

Defects per unit (DPU) is a quality indicator generated by a deffect of:

  • Process
  • Material
  • Design
  • Envirnmental
  • Human Factor
It is a simple metric that is an important part of Six Sigma bases. This indicator identifies the observed defect numbers divided per characteristic or product number.
About DPU and knowledgeable of opportunities, Calculate the capability is possible in short term. Is important keep in mind DPU measure the "symptoms", don´t the causes. Is the dependent variable "Y", don´t independient variable "X"

How We Can Do?

1- Definitions.
A.- Defect: Any failure in product
B.-Unit: Number of units (Parts, Sub-assembly, Systems)

2- DPU. =       (Defect´s Number)
                        (Unit´s Number)
Goals:

  • Effective implementation of a method for process and products defect follow up. Looking towards a Six Sigma quality level.
Improvement results.
  • Effective monitoring of defect trends
  • Identification of quality improvement opportunities.
