I upload a picture saying about our inspection in a city of our country, the picture shows to one inspector holding a particles can and making the test in a light environment.
In any case the picture shows the rest of the team that was supporting to the NDT inspector and the rest of the equipment, Just the Yoke and a Blue Line lamp that we use our field inspections.
Then, as never happen, these picture start a lot of comments in the social media about the testing scene that I have been captured with my camera, I read some comments like “I don´t know how they could validate that inspection” or “ It looks that they have an awful bright for make a fluorescent inspection…”
So, the answer.
I try to clear up the comments about the picture in my possibilities, I realize that many inspectors are ASSUMING about these picture was a definitively image about our inspection process, That is a hot point in a discussion because like inspectors that we are, we need to review and know the most perspectives possible, that mean don´t make previous conjunctions or assume without all the information necessary.
Despite of it, I will talk to our inspection procedure based in ASME Sec V Article 7. Even using our qualify procedure using the appendix III and IV, we perform our inspections using a procedure based in ASME Secc V, Apendix T-777.3
If we read the appendix III, ASME give us a possibility of make the magnetic particle testing with yoke technique using fluorescent particles in a Undarkened area, that mean, the possibility of use the sensibility of a fluorescent inspection always be covered the requirements in a procedure.
As requirements of the written procedure we need to review the tables T-712 and III 712.
In the III-723 point establish that “the procedure shall be demonstrate to the satisfaction of the inspectors accordance with the requirements of the referencing code section”
The III-762 point says that “the white light intensity on the surface of the component shall be no greater than that used in the qualification test” That means, we need to review with a radiometer and ensure that the environment light is no greater that the light used in our procedure request. We need use our radiometer in the site of inspection.
In the Appendix IV we can found the information for the Qualification of alternate wavelength light sources for excitation of fluorescent particles.
As I told, we use in many cases a Blue light Lamp for field inspections. The IV-751 (Qualification standard) provide us information for qualify our procedure inspection using these kind of lights for get the right excitation of fluorescent particles.
